industrial design

The industrial design offers the possibility of giving objects meaning and making them more useful, efficient, and understandable. Industrial design plays an important role in determining the key factoSimplicity is one of the most important industrial design principles. It would help if you tried to concentrate on the main aspects and tasks you want to close when working on a new subject. And there is no need to strive to add new details that are far from always useful constantly.

Principles of good industrial design

1. Good design is always innovative design

It would be best if you did not try to repeat, supplement and change your old ideas because you have the opportunity to do something completely new, attracting the latest developments of scientists, to create something that previously did not exist in either functional or visual implementation. Innovation is not just a fresh novelty but an innovation that has already been used and tested.

2. The item must be comfortable to use

Surely you are working with things that people will use daily. And if so, you definitely need to make sure that the objects are comfortable and functional. These aspects will require no less attention than, for example, the visual beauty of objects.

3. Aesthetics is very important

It's no secret that the things we interact with every day directly affect our outlook, worldview, and inner state. Therefore, a functional, high-quality, well-thought-out thing must certainly also be attractive.

4. Good design is intuitive

It so happens that you have created such an object that is not only difficult to use but even difficult to understand how to interact with such an object at all - and such work can hardly be called successful. Simplicity and clarity in working with a thing solve the user's problem much better than a large jumble of useless details in the design of a thing.

5. Good design doesn't make a name for itself

Ideally, your subject should be unobtrusive and neutral because an industrial designer doesn't work on a piece of art or decoration. Something calm and even will surely be rated higher than something that persistently attracts too much attention to itself.

6. Honesty is essential

Advertising often promises us truly unrealizable opportunities, endowing the product with fabulous properties. However, a designer shouldn't do that. It would help if you tried to be as honest as possible with your customers. It must be remembered that deception is hard to forgive, and at the same time, the frustration of your product not meeting the parameters you promised will last for a very long time.

7. Industrial designer need to create relevant items

This means that you do not need to chase after "fashionable chips" and new trends. Fashion is constantly changing, and what is fashionable now will quickly become outdated. It would help if you tried to do something that will be relevant regardless of changing trends and passing the time.

8. Industrial designer need to think through all the components

During the creation of a certain thing, you cannot work out only those aspects of the object that seem to you the most attractive and perform the "uninteresting" components exclusively formally. It is very important that the item you create is really thought out thoroughly and properly tested - there should not be a single "blank spot." Doing your best for the convenience of your customers will show you care and respect for your customers.

9. Take care of the sustainability of your development

We all live in a shared world with limited resources. Therefore, a correct decision would be to take care of this world, doing everything possible to minimize harmful environmental consequences during the development, creation, use, and subsequent disposal of your items. Some companies are moving towards this principle, using exclusively renewable raw materials in their work, as well as accepting various things for processing, etc.

An Example of Everyday Industrial Design.

We are surrounded by thousands of different things every day. We come into contact with these things and use them in our daily life. And all these things that make up our life, at some level, have an impact on our inner state and on our mood. It is an industrial design that determines how the objective world that surrounds us looks like. If you have a large selection of goods that are approximately the same in quality and functionality, then the ability of the thing to meet the interests of a person emotionally, causing pleasant sensations, and to associate with something joyful for him, becomes decisive.

A good example is the constant disputes between lovers of Apple products and adherents of gadgets running on Android. And at the same time, those who prefer Apple today openly say that they get positive emotions from interacting and owning Apple gadgets. And thanks to these emotions, they even turn a blind eye to some bugs or gaps in the functionality of Apple devices.

What are the top priorities for industrial design?

Industrial design owes its origins in part to architecture, with the only difference that architecture is usually directed towards space, while industrial design is directed towards objects. Among the priority tasks of industrial design:

  • determination of the exterior of the subject;
  • the functionality of the item;
  • identifying the features of the structure of the subject.

What does an industrial designer do?

An industrial designer is a specialist who studies ready-made market samples and creates a quality prototype. The profession is suitable for those who are interested in drawing and sketching. He develops innovative products, and he is also responsible for the quality of designs, so he improves the items we use daily.

The task of an industrial designer is not only to design series-ready products aesthetically. Rather, creatives in this design discipline ensure that the products fulfill their respective purpose in the best possible way. The focus is also on the benefits. When designing consumer and capital goods, economic manufacturability must also be taken into account.

Industrial designers also take a holistic approach. Often it is important to bring the sometimes different interests of producers and consumers to a common denominator with the help of product designs. Function and efficiency play an essential role in development.

What does the industrial or product designer do differently from the graphic designer, the fashion designer, the transportation or automobile designer? In the best-case scenario, they all do the same thing first: they work on the "appropriate and functional design" of a product based on the specialist knowledge they have acquired, just in different industries.

Great design is one with less design

Simplicity is one of the most important principles of industrial design. You should try to concentrate on the main aspects and tasks that you want to close when working on a new subject. And there is no need to strive to add new details that are far from always useful constantly. Modern industrial design, which is based on minimalism principles, and uses new scientific advances, can qualitatively improve people's lives. And what objects people interact with every day directly affects their mood and inner state, and attitude.

A common mistake of industrial designers is trying to keep up with fashion, new trends, and various popular chips, while all this quickly becomes outdated. You need to try to do something of your own, go your own way, and create something that will remain relevant regardless of changing trends and fashionable chips.

You cannot think over some of its components that seem to you the most attractive during the creation of a thing and do the uninteresting work just formally. The item you create must be thoroughly thought out and well tested so that no white spots remain. If you have done everything possible for the convenience of your customers, it shows that you care for them and respect them.

The relationships between Industrial Design and UX.

Industrial Design refers to the design of a good produced by industry. As a precision, it only refers to the part the user can touch and feel. Mechanical, electronics design is part of the Engineer job, who is complementary to the Industrial Designer. User experience (UX) design refers to how a design enhances the experience the user will live when using the product or the service.

Basically, UX Design is the most important part of an Industrial Design job. So that many people say that Industrial Design is included in the UX Design field. Generally speaking, UX refers to the experience of the interaction a user has with a digital interface (screen) - and is hence not equated to Industrial Design.

So that one from the software field would tell you that the UX Designer is in charge of the User Interface design of the software. This is because he doesn’t know that it is, in fact, a more generic term. Some people say that Industrial Design refers to the "Experience Design" field and not only the "User Experience Field". This is because the user is not the only important guy who interacts with the product. There is also the buyer (can be different), witnesses, installer, etc.
